NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Tanzania on Monday announced it had withdrawn approval for neighboring Kenya's flagship carrier Kenya Airways to operate a passenger service between the countries beginning next week. A statement from the Tanzanian Civil Aviation authority said the move was in response to Kenya Civil Aviation Authority denying Air Tanzania the approvals it needed to operate all cargo flights between the two countries. The statement said the ban on Kenya Airways passenger flights will start on Jan. 22. The unusually heavy rains are largely caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon and are forecast to continue into the new year by the Kenya Meteorological Department. Severe flooding caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon has killed hundreds of people in Kenya and Somalia in recent weeks. "We are very shocked by this event," President Samia Suluhu Hassan said in a video message posted online by the Tanzanian ministry of health. The more than 20 people were killed in Katesh village in the Hanang district of Manyara, the president said. The heavy rain on Saturday night caused landslides in some areas of Mount Hanang, domestic media outlets reported, adding that the waters also swept away livestock.

You befriend a curmudgeonly stranger and one day, out of the blue, the old grouch bequeaths you a gift to change your life. But for Mark Herman, a former dog walker now living on Social Security, an auction house in Dallas told him exactly how much that fantasy was worth. In his cluttered apartment in Upper Manhattan on Tuesday, Mr. Herman watched speechless as the auctioneer declared the final bid on Lot 77070, an untitled Chuck Close painting that briefly, improbably, belonged to him. On hand to record Mr. Herman’s reaction was Amy Sargeant, one of two filmmakers who contacted him after the story of his painting appeared in The New York Times this summer. She had read about it on a ferry to a remote island in Tanzania.

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - The prosecutor tasked with finding the last remaining fugitives from the U.N. war crimes court for Rwanda on Tuesday confirmed the death of genocide suspect Aloys Ndimbati, leaving only two people remaining wanted by the Rwanda tribunal. In the last three years the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) has arrested two Rwandan genocide suspects and confirmed the deaths of four other fugitives, including Ndimbati. In a statement U.N. prosecutors said they concluded Ndimbati died in 1997 in Rwanda. Ndimbati, a Rwandan public official during the 1994 genocide, was accused of having personally organised and directed the killings of thousands of Tutsis and faced multiple genocide charges. There are no remaining fugitives from the Yugoslavia tribunal and now only two outstanding suspects for the Rwanda tribunal.

Nov 9 (Reuters) - Former France under-21 international Sofiane Diop has accepted a first call-up from Morocco for the start of their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign this month, coach Walid Regragui confirmed on Thursday. Nice midfielder Diop, 23, was born in France but is also eligible for Morocco, who reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar and recently recruited another French youth international in Bayer Leverkusen winger Amine Adli. "He (Diop) is a player who could have chosen other countries also. CNN —German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier apologized Wednesday for colonial-era atrocities committed by German forces in Tanzania during a visit to the East African country. Tanganyika, now present-day Tanzania, was first a German colony before coming under British control in 1919. Steinmeier told the Mbano family in Tanzania that his country would work towards finding Mbano’s remains, which may have been transported to Europe by German troops for burial after his execution. “I promise that we will work together with you to find Chief Songea’s skull in Germany,” the German president added. Steinmeier also traveled to Zambia Wednesday, with both visits aimed at fostering partnerships, according to the German government.
